Background of the Study

Conflicts between farmers and herders have been a significant challenge in Jibia Local Government Area (LGA), Katsina State, driven by competition over natural resources, climate change, and population growth. These conflicts often result in loss of lives, destruction of property, and displacement of communities. Communication strategies, including dialogue facilitation, community media, and participatory conflict resolution frameworks, have emerged as effective tools for mitigating these clashes. Development communication emphasizes inclusive platforms that allow stakeholders to voice their concerns and collaboratively develop solutions (Adamu et al., 2024). Studies indicate that culturally sensitive and participatory communication strategies foster understanding, reduce tensions, and promote sustainable coexistence (Okeke & Musa, 2023). This study evaluates the impact of such communication strategies in addressing farmer-herder conflicts in Jibia LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Farmer-herder conflicts in Jibia LGA have persisted despite various government and community interventions. Often, the root causes—such as resource scarcity and mistrust—remain unaddressed, exacerbating tensions. Existing communication strategies have frequently been top-down, limiting their effectiveness. Without proper platforms for dialogue, misinformation and biases prevail, further deepening conflicts. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of development communication in addressing these conflicts, identifying gaps in existing approaches and proposing actionable solutions.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the role of communication strategies in resolving conflicts between farmers and herders in Jibia LGA.

  2. To identify barriers to effective communication in conflict resolution efforts in Jibia LGA.

  3. To recommend communication strategies for fostering sustainable relationships between farmers and herders in Jibia LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do communication strategies contribute to resolving farmer-herder conflicts in Jibia LGA?

  2. What are the barriers to effective communication in addressing these conflicts?

  3. What strategies can improve communication for sustainable conflict resolution in Jibia LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Communication strategies significantly impact conflict resolution between farmers and herders in Jibia LGA.

  2. Barriers such as mistrust and cultural differences hinder effective communication in conflict resolution.

  3. Participatory communication approaches enhance mutual understanding and reduce conflicts in Jibia LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study provides insights into the role of communication in resolving farmer-herder conflicts, contributing to peace-building efforts in Jibia LGA. By highlighting effective strategies and identifying barriers, it offers valuable recommendations for policymakers, community leaders, and NGOs. The findings will also support the development of inclusive and sustainable frameworks for managing farmer-herder relations, promoting regional stability and economic development.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the impact of communication strategies on conflict resolution between farmers and herders in Jibia LGA, Katsina State. It examines existing communication initiatives, their effectiveness, and barriers to success. Limitations may include access to respondents due to ongoing conflicts and sensitivity of the topic.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Farmer-Herder Conflicts: Disputes between agricultural farmers and pastoral herders over land and resources.

  2. Development Communication: Strategic communication methods used to foster understanding and resolve conflicts in community development.

  3. Jibia Local Government Area: A conflict-prone region in Katsina State, Nigeria, affected by farmer-herder disputes.
