Background of the Study
Conflicts between farmers and herders have been a significant challenge in Jibia Local Government Area (LGA), Katsina State, driven by competition over natural resources, climate change, and population growth. These conflicts often result in loss of lives, destruction of property, and displacement of communities. Communication strategies, including dialogue facilitation, community media, and participatory conflict resolution frameworks, have emerged as effective tools for mitigating these clashes. Development communication emphasizes inclusive platforms that allow stakeholders to voice their concerns and collaboratively develop solutions (Adamu et al., 2024). Studies indicate that culturally sensitive and participatory communication strategies foster understanding, reduce tensions, and promote sustainable coexistence (Okeke & Musa, 2023). This study evaluates the impact of such communication strategies in addressing farmer-herder conflicts in Jibia LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Farmer-herder conflicts in Jibia LGA have persisted despite various government and community interventions. Often, the root causes—such as resource scarcity and mistrust—remain unaddressed, exacerbating tensions. Existing communication strategies have frequently been top-down, limiting their effectiveness. Without proper platforms for dialogue, misinformation and biases prevail, further deepening conflicts. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of development communication in addressing these conflicts, identifying gaps in existing approaches and proposing actionable solutions.
